Vehicle Environment Terrain Response Application Control System
A Revolutionary System for Monitoring Traffic and Controlling Traffic Signals

The Current Reality

  • All other traffic signals “react” to traffic after it enters the intersection.
  • Our environment is negatively impacted by the useless idling and acceleration of vehicles from intersections.
  • As an inconvenience of our daily lives, the current traffic control systems need to be more effective and efficient.
  • Time and energy is wasted by vehicles needlessly idling at intersections while waiting for the signal to give them the legal right of way, often without opposing traffic.
  • Traffic congestion is increased by traffic signals that are not responsive to real-time vehicle traffic and weather conditions.
  • Most Traffic lights use timers that are programmed to change signals at predetermined intervals of time based on the average traffic pattern of the intersection. The timers passively control the traffic signals to historical traffic data instead of anticipating the needs of the intersection in real time.
  • Timers do not account for weather conditions, accidents and other randomly occurring events.
  • Camera systems are also reactive, using raster images that required large amounts of computation power, time and data storage. Since cameras have no depth perception, the entire system lacks sufficient accuracy. The other option is human control rooms that are filled with expensive employees.
  • As a result, current systems are uneconomical and impractical for monitoring and controlling the flow of vehicles.
  • Even with more sophisticated sensors, traffic signals are only able to react to vehicles that have already entered or stopped at an intersection.

The Big Questions:

  • Is there a way to improve the traffic systems that unnecessarily waste precious travel time and energy?
  • How can we use innovative cutting edge technology to reduce green house gasses?
  • How can we save fuel with less idling and unnecessary acceleration?
  • Can the current traffic control system be optimized to ease the travel experience?
  • Is there a way to reduce the annoying wait at traffic lights when no other cars are at the other lights in the intersection?

The Answer is YES!

  • VETRACS is a system for monitoring objects e.g. vehicle traffic, controlling the flow of such objects through a flow point such as an intersection having traffic control signals to avoid collisions and facilitate the efficient flow of such objects

Detect. Identify. Monitor. Predict. Control.

  • It can be used for detecting and identifying objects in the vicinity of an intersection, monitoring the movement of objects, predicting the future movements of objects and controlling the future movements of objects.

The Solution

The Solution

How is VETRACS Innovative:

  • A Sensor Processing Unit (SPU) connects with the vector imaging sensor to process the node-based objects with motion sensor data. It tracks objects uniquely from the many background captures by the vector imaging sensors. The tracked image data is then extracted into an object database.
  • A central Tracking Unit (CTU) which is associated with the SPU then classifies the tracked object and predicts the future state of the tracked object and generates a object specific output for controlling the traffic signal thereby easing the flow of objects through the flow point.
  • Differentiates between bikes, motorcycles, cars, vans, trucks and busses. Each can be given a priority value.
  • Determinations are made to maximize flow well before vehicles arrive at intersections.

How is VETRACS Versatile:

  • The VETRACS System can be built as a stand alone unit for new intersections or retrofitted to existing systems with the same level of efficiency.
  • Since all vehicles are being tracked, accidents will be automatically recorded. Any traffic accident can be quickly recreated, reviewed and presented in court.
  • The system correctly anticipates the needs and flow of vehicle traffic approaching an intersection and controls the traffic signals in advance to maximize the flow of traffic in a safe and efficient manner. As a result, vehicles do not needlessly stop or idle at intersections.
